What Happened at the Rialto Square Theatre?

From the dazzling performances, movie screenings, and multiple reports of paranormal activity, the Rialto Square Theatre has seen it all. While the reports of ghosts are constantly argued, everyone can easily agree on the building’s architectural magnificence.

Building the Rialto Square Theatre

The Ruben brothers first opened the Rialto Square Theatre in 1926 as a symbol of their prosperity and cultural ambitions. The intricate designs draw inspiration from various styles, such as the Italian Renaissance, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Rococo, Venetian, and Baroque.

Each of these styles blends together to create a truly breathtaking interior. The Rialto’s official website notes: “No two spaces are alike, creating a feast for the eyes at every turn.”

The Spirits Within the Rialto

Aside from the impressive architecture and iconic performances, the Square has gained an impressive reputation for being haunted, bringing countless visitors to the historic landmark of Illinois. Various spirits are rumored to roam these hallowed halls, each with its unique story and specific connection to the theater’s past. Even the iconic hit television series Ghost Hunters has investigated the theater and documented some strange occurrences.

Vivian is believed to be a former Vaudeville performer who is known to communicate with visitors and even express her love for the theater. This Vaudeville performer is arguably the most well-known of Rialto’s inhabitants.

According to a variety of paranormal investigators, Vivian’s presence is most often associated with the star’s dressing room. Many visitors have reported rapid drops in temperature, a faint scent of vintage perfume, and the nagging feeling that they are being watched.

A few paranormal investigators even claimed to have communicated with the haunting performer through Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP) recordings. All in all, these recordings captured faint whispers of Vivian expressing her love for the theater.

One particularly compelling story involves a group of investigators who, upon asking if Vivian was happy with the theater’s restoration, received a clear, disembodied voice saying, “Beautiful, just beautiful.”

Little Colin

While Vivian is the elegant and nostalgic spirit of the Rialto Theater, Colin is the hall’s mischievous spirit, infamously known for playing pranks on visitors. The playful spirit is said to tug on clothing, play with hair, and even cause objects to move on their own supposedly. This activity adds a truly playful element to the theater’s paranormal reputation.

While the origin of Colin is not certain, it is believed his death was due to being hit by a car outside of the theater. Other stories point to Colin being a runaway who sought refuge in the Rialto and proceeded to die within the theater.

The Woman in White (The Bride)

The Woman in White, typically found haunting the back staircase, is most commonly associated with wedding receptions, hence the name. Many believe this ghost was a former performer or a bride from a previous event.

Also, a ghastly pair has reportedly been seen in the balcony, leading to speculation of a tragic accident in the theater’s past.

Stories of these spirits have contributed to the Rialto’s mystique throughout the years. Paranormal investigators and enthusiasts are eager to experience the theater’s haunted side. Therefore it sees many inquisitive guests garnering for a look into the unknown.

Separating Fact From Fiction

While the ghost stories add to the Rialto’s allure, it’s important to remember the theater’s rich history and architectural significance. The building has survived economic hardship, changing entertainment trends, and the test of time. It was even a favorite haunt of Al Capone

The Rialto Square Theatre remains a vital part of Joliet’s cultural landscape. It hosts various events and serves as a gathering place for the community. Check the Rialto’s schedule for upcoming shows and events.
